Approximately one week.

Remodeling your bathroom is a very cost efficient and effective way to increase the value of your home and make it a much more pleasant place to live. But how long does it take to do this? A bathroom renovation can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the type of work you want to get done. A small bathroom renovation can be completed easily and larger ones can take more time, there are several things to consider when trying to understand how long the remodeling will take.

If walls are moved to increase or decrease the space, there will be a lot more work to be done resulting in extra working hours. The time it takes to complete your bathroom renovation project will depend on your specific needs. Once the remodeling begins, the bathroom is off limits to everyday use and your routine is disrupted. That’s why it’s important to maintain a balanced schedule and work routine when opting for a bathroom remodeling.

Bathroom renovation involves a number of different approaches such as replacing the fixtures, changing the lighting, installing washbasins and storage space such as closets, walk-in closets etc. Since most bathrooms are small spaces filled with functional items, it is very difficult to add new features. To counter this, a number of decorative items can be added to the bathroom. These include things like towel hangers, towels, soap dishes, flower pots, house plants, mats, small wall hangings, and light fixtures. This form of bathroom renovation gives the bathroom a warm, artistic look without much work. A more detailed bathroom renovation involves many different things and may take more time.

To fully understand how much time it can take to renovate your bathroom, let’s break down the steps required to go through the process:

Demolition

Normally it takes 2 days to remove and clean everything. Depending on how major a remodel you are doing, you will need to spend some time removing unnecessary walls, removing your shower, toilet, sink and vanity, and reframing accordingly. However, keep in mind that that time can be extended if floor tiles don’t go as easily or if other additional work is required.

Plumbing

Standard plumbing is normally between 1 and 2 days and depends on the size of the bathroom. If no major relocation and replacement of toilet and bathroom or shower drains is required, the plumber should be able to complete the plumbing and install a bathtub in one business day.

Electrical

Bathrooms usually don’t need a lot of work in the electrical department. A few lights and outlets is all you likely need, a job that a good electrician shouldn’t take more than a few hours.

Insulation

An important part of any bathroom, a quick insulation job is usually done within a day.

Drywall

Once the insulation is in place it’s time to move on by hanging drywall, which will definitely take a day of your project. Once that’s done, it’s time to finish the drywall (i.e. mud, sand, and prime) and backer boards for installing tile. The time you spend tiling depends on the type of tile and the design you want. That means you need to add at least two more days to your count.

Floors

This depends on the floor you have chosen. If you go the way of the vinyl, half a day should do it. Tiles and engineered wood will certainly take more, sometimes up to 2 days to finish

Cabinets

Bathroom cabinets are usually done in no time as there isn’t much work here anyway. Add 1 day to your estimate.

Fixtures

Probably one of the easiest and fastest works on any bathroom renovation, installing them shouldn’t take more than a day. Bring in your large fixtures like the shower, toilet, and vanity / sink.

Glass elements such as shower doors and mirrors are fitted last, so there is minimal risk of them cracking or being damaged during work.

The Finishing Touch

Once everything is installed and has had time to dry, do a final inspection and clean it. This does not take more than half a day. Once that’s done, you can enjoy using your bathroom.

Every bathroom remodeling is different. How long your friend’s bathroom remodel took isn’t necessarily how long yours will take. That’s why you should always keep in mind that remodeling yours requires you to spend nearly a month doing a disruptive remodel, yet it is one of the most rewarding home improvement projects.
