How it started

Three months ago my boss called and informed me that we’d be going on another business trip to a neighboring state. It was barely two weeks since we returned from the last business trip. For me, traveling and seeing new places is something I find quite interesting so I usually get excited whenever it’s time for another journey.

Although it wasn’t my first time going to this particular state, however, every new trip always feels like the first time to me. We were to move on Thursday afternoon alongside 3 other staff members. By flight, it takes approximately 45 minutes to reach our destination. I got prepared, packed my suitcase, and headed straight for departure.

My home

I stay alone in a 2 bedroom apartment and because I’m a huge fan of wide and spacious accommodation, I didn’t have much to worry about. My friend Alisa comes to spend the weekend once in a few months before she got married but since she tied the knot in July last year, she had only been here once and couldn’t even sleepover. My first hearing of a home security system was from Alisa.

She told me how it helped her and her husband figure out what happens in their home and its surroundings whenever they weren’t around. She once relayed an event where a guy was trying to break into their apartment but couldn’t after hearing the attention-calling noise of the alarm – he had to flee.

Honestly, I once considered installing a home security system in my apartment but I wasn’t just sure enough if it would worth my time and money. I finally decided to leave things the way they were after thinking about it for a while after all my neighborhood was quite safe and I had never heard of any case of burglary since I started living there. It was already 5 years and 3 months since I moved in – how time flies.

Our trip to the state

Anyway, we got to the state and rested till the next day, held some business meetings, decided on actions, and new models to be tested, and spent the rest of the day exploring the city.

Without much delays, we set out for our return that weekend and as usual, I headed straight home.

Back to my house

As soon as I alighted from the taxi, I noticed the window of one of the rooms wasn’t properly closed. Could I have forgotten to close the window? I asked myself. But I’m pretty sure everything was locked before I finally “checked out”, after all, it wasn’t my first time traveling. Instead of heading straight to the door, I decided to have a look through the window to make sure everything was under control.

As I approached the window with utmost care and caution, the sight of a damaged window lock stole my attention. The damage was such that one could tell this wasn’t done accidentally. I gentle peeked through the window to steal a glance at the room and possibly see if there’s anybody there.

After confirming there was no other person inside, I still couldn’t summon up enough courage to open the door.

In the search for help

Without hesitation, I called the police for help and in no time their car arrived – Its hooting horn breaking into the silence of the atmosphere. What’s the matter? They asked. I explained to them immediately and they took the keys from me leading me into the unknown of the apartment.

As soon as I stepped inside, I could notice that some items were missing. I rushed towards the drawer to check if my cash and documents were still there. The cash was gone! My documents were gone! What?!  I checked my wardrobe and some of my personal belongings were gone. Shoes, clothes, wristwatches, and jewelry. I cried! But that couldn’t solve anything. Every day for about a week, I keep discovering that more things were stolen than I earlier found out.

The words of Alisa came knocking on the door of my memory and I already knew I had found the answer to my doubts about getting a home security system, but it was painful to learn from such experience.

I wish I could tell everyone in the world how important it is to secure their home and valuables from intruders and burglars. At least they could prevent the horrible experience before it happens.

Safety first

I contacted Alisa and told her everything. She felt so bad such a thing could happen to me, especially when I could have prevented it. Her soothing words of encouragement were the “life jacket” that kept me aloft during those trying times. I began to spend my time reading more about home security systems and also sought the advice of my friend whenever I needed to.

To my surprise

I soon started to discover how much of options I had with home security systems and what great benefits they have. From being able to monitor my home on my phone from anywhere I am to getting alerted whenever there was a fire outbreak, the list was just impressive. I could even equip my home with a gas detector.

This will help me detect when gases leak or whenever I have a potentially harmful gas in the atmosphere, even if they are colorless, odorless, and tasteless. A Gas like carbon mono oxide which is toxic to humans and animals when inhaled can be detected early enough for the occupants to flee to safety.

I got myself one and didn’t even know that merely having it installed in my home had the potential of creating a different kind of comfort, peace, and tranquility in my heart – one I hadn’t experienced in a long time. I felt safe and secured from burglars even when I was out of town for various trips. The benefits of installing a good security system definitely outweigh its cost by far. If you’re thinking about installing one, go for it. Don’t wait for the horrible experience before taking the action.
