Gardens have been around for a long time, and most families are gradually having their private gardens either in front or backyards. Gardens can serve several functions depending on the type of garden you are setting up. It can be for food, aesthetics, and even preservations. Here are the main types of garden you can get your hands on.

Gardens

Types of Gardens

Flower gardens

Depending on the country, a flower garden might have different plants that are grown in them. However, the planning and principles are almost the same everywhere, irrespective of the type, whether formal or informal. Trees and shrubs form the basis of a correctly designed flower garden. Usually, these perennial features are planned first, and later the spaces for arranging herbaceous plants, bulbs, and annual plants could be planned.

Water garden

The water garden can be any vessel filled with water, whether a pond, half-barrel, bathtub, or watertight planter. These types of gardens are often made up of fish, aquatic plants, and other aquatic foods. It can be as simple as a large bowl filled with water with some plants or complex pools equipped with waterfalls, filters, and varieties of plants

Setting up an aquatic garden is easy; the most basic items you will need are waterproof containers, pots of aquatic plants, fine gravel, and freshwater. Combining submerged plants, emergent plants, and floaters is recommended. Usually, the aquatic plant for a water garden includes dwarf papyrus, wild celery, water lettuce, and water hyacinth.

Rock garden

Rock gardens are designed to look like a natural part of a rocky hill or slope. If stones are added, they are usually placed on wide edges, as in natural layers. Some large rocks generally look better than small ones. In a properly designed rock garden, rocks are positioned to provide more space for sun-tolerant plants like rockroses, and shade-tolerant plants, such as primulas, which are generally more suitable in a cool, north-facing view. A lot of smaller perennials are available to fill the gaps in the vertical cracks between the rocks.

Sandstone and limestone are the main rocks from which the rock gardens are built. Sandstone, which is usually less irregular and with traces, looks calmer and more natural, but some plants, especially most dianthus, strive best with limestone. Granite is generally considered very hard and not ideal for these types of gardens because it slowly weathers out.

Vegetable gardens

These types of gardens are used for growing vegetables and other plants good for consumption instead of a flower garden, which has an aesthetic purpose. They are also referred to as a vegetable patch or vegetable plot. This is a way of growing vegetables on a small scale.

Woodland

This garden is usually set under deciduous trees. It can range from partial shade to deep shade and is usually plant-based material where the roots should not be disturbed. The essence of the woodland garden is ease and naturalness.

Botanical gardens

The main purpose of setting up a botanical garden is to display many varieties of plant species. They are mostly made to care for plants and also cultivate them. Many times, botanical gardens are tourist centers that are made accessible to the public. In addition, impressive species of plants that do not grow normally anywhere will be seen in the botanical garden.

Container garden

These gardens are mostly set up by people who have limited space around them to have a well-designed garden. And as the name implies, container gardening involves using different containers to plant varieties of things. These containers are of different types; they can be flower pots, totes, tubs, barrels, and other suitable containers. The setup is straightforward; put fertile soil into the container, and you can start planting.

Community gardens

Community gardens have gradually become a trend that many communities in North America are adopting. This type of gardening involves growing vegetables and other plants on community property. Generally, the community garden is a way of using fruits and vegetables to cater to people in need of help. As a community member, you are eligible to take a certain amount of food in the community garden every month, depending on the area.
